Why a toner in your skincare routine is essential . . .

A question I get asked A LOT when giving a facial or consulting on skincare . . . . “Do I really need a toner”??.  The short, immediate answer is YES.  Using a toner after cleansing and before your serums and moisturizers will help those nutrient rich products work better and be more effective in the long run.

We LOVE our Comfort Zone Essential Toner (which has the most alluring light scent!!) because it not only balances the skin but is a nutritional powerhouse in it’s own right.  It’s active ingredients include Betaine which is a natural osmolyte (amino acids which play an important role is cellular hydration) extracted from sugar beets and Vitamin B3, also known as niacinamide which is a very effective skin-restoring ingredient that offers multiple benefits for aging skin. Among these benefits is the ability to visibly improve the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines, dullness, and a weakened skin surface.

If you need more convincing, here is a slightly longer list of benefits to this essential step in your skincare routine:

1.  It shrinks pores.

Applying a small amount of toner to a soft cotton ball or pad and gently blotting and wiping your face with it will remove oil and give the appearance of smaller pores.

2. It restores your skin's pH balance.

Our skin is naturally acidic, typically with a pH balance of between five and six (on a scale from 0 to 14). But that balance can get out of whack after cleansing due to the alkaline nature of soap. When this happens, your skin needs to work overtime to return to its normal levels (and that may result in oil), but using a toner can help restore this balance quickly.

3. It adds a layer of protection.

Toners can help close pores and tighten cell gaps after cleansing, reducing the penetration of impurities and environmental contaminants into the skin. It can even protect and remove chlorine and minerals present in tap water.

4. It acts like a moisturizer.

Some toners are humectants, which means they help to bind moisture to the skin.

5. It refreshes skin.

Toner can also be used in lieu of washing your skin when it's oily or dirty. It will leave your skin revitalized even when you're on the go.

And if I could add one personal tip — carrying a travel size spray toner with you throughout the day is a wonderful way to hydrate your skin mid-day and can help refresh the look of your makeup a bit.  It’s a wonderful “attitude adjuster” when you’re feeling stressed or rushed.  Treat yourself!
